Processor type: 32-bit PowerPC 450 at 850 MHz.

:wtf: Isn't PowerPC like...An ancient Macintosh processor?

The PowerPC is an IBM processor, though, it was previously used by Apple. I guess they're using an "old" chip for a number of reasons - Easier to cool, cheaper to build, consumes less power, and it was probably a new-ish chip in the design stages.

What? It's only 32 bit?  So you're telling me that this uber pimp computer is still going to fuck up my dates in 2038?  Spend obscene amounts of money and still can't get a stupid date right.  I think we were better off throwing sticks and beating our chests and being amazed at fire.  Can't go wrong with fire.  Fire never failed to do its job.

How many super computers do you know that are still up and working 28 years after they come online?  it's already obsolete in terms of technology...

I wonder what they do with them whey they're "obsolete"... Donate them to a university, government, chuck it on eBay?

Actually, that computer is probably significantly slower than mine for running computer games. Sounds like it doesn't have much of (if one) a video card. And really, what good is 294,912 processor cores? How many threads will a computer /ever/ use? I'm sure never 294,912 threads.

:anim_reading:

I highly doubt a research institute would use such a computer for games. Who knows what their going to actually use it for (perhaps complex particle physics simulations for example?), but I'd wager that using it to to play a few rounds of Unreal Tournament or Crysis wouldn't exactly be on the task list.

I started reading the comments page for that article.. While I don't use Vista, I had to laugh at this one:

144 terabytes of RAM. Might be enough to run Vista without crashing

Some people are such smart asses lol

I wouldn't know what to do with one of these things about 5 minutes after sitting at it. When I built my i7 box, the first thing I did was conduct a race between it, and my previous machine, to see how quickly it could merge a couple of Gigs of avi files. After being suitably impressed, I just got on with my coding...

merging a couple of gigs of avi's, huh? PORN MASHUPS FTW.

LoL I can just imagine... A guy new to the computer world.. Goes into a computer shop...

Asks, Hi what would you recommened for a guy new to computers but that won't get out of date quickly and also cheap?

They redirect him to ebay for a supercomputer... The guy smacks it with the highest bid and wins...

Next thing he knows theyre building a double story over his house for his 'computer'...

LoL bet it's dusty in there too... They really need some BUG repellent...
