unidox
Depends, there are many versions of linux and windows. You want linux if you are good with coding, and are an experienced geek You want windows if your are new to computers. On my laptop I still have command based linux , and on this computer red hat
ober
Wow... talk about a loaded question. There is no "better" OS... they both have their own strengths and weaknesses.
zq29
I've switched my main office dev machine back from Linux (Ubuntu) to XP Pro - I found the multi-monitor support in Ubuntu so buggy and sluggish that I had to move back to Windows - Still use Ubuntu on my single screened machine, though it gets minimal use as I use my Mac for every-day stuff at home... steelmanronald06
This battle has been raging since the beginning of time...or since Linux and Windows both co-existed. Really, it is all personal opinion. I think linux is better because it is free, but windows is better because it is more universal...Depends really. Each has pros and cons. redbullmarky
thumbs up here for Windows, but mainly because i'm used to it - so i can get around both Windows itself and most applications that fit its "style". I've considered the switch quite a bit, but the learning curve/change of familiarity as an everyday machine puts me off. Same went for OS X - it's better than Windows in many ways, but I always just find that my extra knowledge of Windows carries me through what i need to do much quicker. Vista (whilst very different in terms of organisation) took me a day or two of working with to properly get my head around compared to XP - but otherwise, it fits the same mould so is easy enough. Like ober said tho - it's a loaded question. Some put it down to what's better or not, but I just put it down to whatever can help me do what I need to do as quickly and easily as possible. Windows therefore gets my vote here.

redbullmarky
i am interested to know i am not new to computers yet i am only a little experienced which would be better for me? depends what you need it for. most things can be achieved on either platform, but if you're (for example) into popular games, then a Windows PC is the way. If you like things simple, then Windows is the way. If you like to have full/greater control, then Linux is the way, but be prepared for a bit of a learning curve. Honestly - there really isn't anything between them. People harp on about security, yet Windows is bound to be the primary target for infections, etc because it's the most common - and 99% of people that get their computer messed up are either too lazy/inexperienced to figure out how to lock it down properly or spend too much time surfing for porn sites using an unpatched/unprotected computer. People go on about performance, yet for basic tasks such as running local test servers or web browsing or using Office, it really doesnt matter. Performance only really comes into play if you're (for example) a game developer using C++, or a musician running Cubase/Logic, etc, or a designer running intensive tasks using Photoshop, or a video editor, or a fan of modern games (most of which are built for Windows anyway, so again - performance not really an issue here). I tried Linux, and actually like it alot - notably desktops such as Ubuntu but i've toyed with others too - but at the end of the day, Windows is popular, well supported, well documented, easy to use, and does everything I need it for. I don't subscribe anymore to the fanboy attitude of "windoze is crap, linux/osx is the best, etc", simply cos when interrogated, most cant explain exactly why. A little like those new developers that claim to do all their coding using the original Notepad, or those that insist on AJAX for every last detail of the site even though they don't know the implications, or those that say "Firefox is better than everything else" but can't give you the reasons why - only that they were told by someone else. Bandwagons, etc. Sorry for harping on, but just run a Google search on "Windows vs Linux", and you'll see exactly what I mean. Windows (XP/Vista) is a powerful and capable OS, regardless of what people say.

burtybob
personally i would say a bus! But thanks for the tips the main things i would be doing is: 1) surfing the net 2) playing php games (on the net) 3) making and (hopefully) running php games. 4) a couple years down the line C/C++ So with the new info is it a bit easier on which to use for those although reading the post that answered me i would say windows. ober
You could do all of that in either. However, unless you're fairly skilled with installations and understanding of basic hardware config, I'd stick to Windows.

trq
You would be surprise about how many people who would actual read it! But...as has been said, its all just opinions. I have been a long term Linux user and absolutely love it, however, I realise it isn't for everybody so theres not much point in trying to push it down someones throat. Why don't you download one of the LiveCD distros and try to form an opninion for yourself? A LiveCD doesn't need to be installed and will give you a decent feel for what is available. An easy way to get your hands on one of these LiveCD's is probably to buy a Linux mag. The last one I buoght had a live SUSE distro. These are great for simple testing. But yeah... as for which is best? There are no straight answers to that question.

I could have made a big 10 page long post explaining my reasoning behind it, it's just that that would have taken a long time and noone would have read it anyways. And it would still be your opinions. That fact does not change. The fact is that Windows sucks. The only reason it's so popular is that Microsoft was lucky and got a monopoly over operating systems before any serious competitors could arise. So now everyone makes programs/games for Windows. So everyone has to use Windows or not be able to use their favorite games/software.

hcdarkmage
I am starting to sense a little hostility in the air. There are a lot of people (like me) who grew up knowing nothing BUT Windows. It stems from (in my case, anyways) listening to my father tell me Windows is for the practical man, and is the only operating system you will ever need! Not knowing that there are other OSes out there, you tend to stick with what you know. And then there is the flame wars. Just because you like a particular OS, it doesn't make it the best. Everybody has there own opinion on what is best, and the only way to find out is to try it for yourself. Do you skip over movies because a critic only gave it one star? steelmanronald06
I admit i'm not a microsoft fan, but windows only sucks when you think of the use to which it is put. For school, gaming, and general use it is excellent. Great GUI and everything. It is even useful for older people, or non computer savy people. If your a programmer (non-asp/vb), computer savey, want to learn more about servers, or just want to extend your computer knowledge, then windows sucks. It is much harder to manipulate because the GUI does it all for you. With Linux, even though it has two or three good GUIs, you can manipulate it all from a Terminal. A very powerful terminal, mind. That is why I think windows sucks. Because I'm to restricted on what I can do. It simply isn't powerful/flexible enough to meet the standards of a computer programmer/savey person like myself. On a later note, just because I approve of windows for use by some group of people, windows and microsoft are two VERY different arguments. there is NOTHING about microsoft I approve of...but that is a different discussion for another time and place. :-\
Azu
The fact is that Windows sucks. Why? Just because you say so it doesn't make it a fact. It's less secure, less fast, less sexy, less free, less customizable, and less dependable then, say, Linux. Would there be any reason to use Windows if the luck was reversed (people made programs/games for Linux and not for Windows)? No, I don't think so.. in fact it would probably be much less popular then Linux is now.. All Windows has going for it is monopoly power.
redbullmarky
in many respects, Linux and Mac's can be far less secure, just because people don't know how to use/set them up properly compared to PC's. The whole Windows vs Linux vs Mac debate is highly boring and somewhat boils my piss everytime I see the topic come up, simply as the pros and cons of each only leave personal preference as the deciding factor as to what is better or not. Same as the old PHP vs ASP, etc blah blah etc debates. I used Linux for servers. I use Windows for most of my dev work. I use Mac's at work. I like all 3. I prefer Windows because I'm more comfortable with it and can lock it down better and can work faster and hence make more money. Having security issues with your system as a coder/developer means you probably don't know enough to lock it down. No excuses. Don't blame MS. Dont blame Linux. Don't blame Apple. I challenge any of those who mostly just say "Windoze (lolz) suckz because Bill Gates is a muppet" to back up their words with non-quoted, original, self-affecting material. It 99% of the time never happens and arguments against these companies are heavily based around the "hmm - what's cool to say today?" group of thinkers. MS rocks. So does Apple. and Linux too. over and out.
