What about having a JS thing, where it shows like "A total of 10 people have been active in this thread" and then click to show who. It was a bit clunky and looked like it's been around forever, I kinda liked it and got used to it. This one is just more modernized, not as indistinguishable from other ones. Although the only thing to do, is move forward, so it indeed is a good move..
