just day before my lappy hdd broke any idea how did this happen? i never did drop it anywhere but  it out of nowhere started to make some noice and when i took it for repair they said it was broken so anyways i bought 160gb hdd and also expanded my ram to 2 gb but im still wondering how did it break i dismentaled the entire hdd lol as i nvere saw what was inside it and i found some broken part in it.

yes the last thing i did on my lappy was use the app called virtual dj, is it possible that a software was responsible fo my hdd damage?

Well the broken parts, could have been from you opening it. As without the proper tools the discs can easily be broken. If the parts did break on their own, chances are it was a harddrive issue and you should have returned it (if it was still under warranty) for a replacement. But since opening the case you voided that. So yea, best bet is either someone dropped it when you were not looking, you just got a lemon harddrive or the Underpant Gnomes decided that you had some underpants hidden on your harddrive and wanted to try and get it out, but failed.

I highly doubt it unless the software some how messed with the power being sent to the harddrive and caused it to spin sooo fast that the disks broke. But I have never heard of or seen that happen.

Which kind of HDD was it? IDE or SATA.  I ask because IDE have an RPM (rotations per minute) rate.  And the typical RPM for an IDE HDD is 7,200.  So you could just imagine the liabilities involved there.  Just bumping your laptop the wrong way could essentially "break" something.  Seeing as how that's really GD fast, I'd say that spinning disc has enough momentum to break anything.  Even it is wasn't 7200 RPM it would have been at least 5400.. which is still, beyond human abilities.  So that would be your answer assuming your HDD was IDE.

If it was SATA then perhaps some dust got in there or the drive was faulty to begin with.  I can't exactly pull an explanation for something breaking in an SATA drive out of my ass.  That's pretty odd.  Those are solid state drives.  Much like a USB Flash drive.  So just imagine ways in which a flash drive could tear up and that's probably what happened to your SATA Hard drive (assuming it was SATA)

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is the interface, you're thinking of SSD - Solid State Disk.

Hmm.. Don't know why I was under the impression SATAs didn't spin.  But regardless, since they both spin now....consider what I said to begin with in the IDE paragraph.

Lesson of the day: Solid State Discs FTW!

Not sure about the Harddrives in laptops, but the ones in Desktop computers will break if you jerk them the wrong way. I had the misfortune of finding this out the hard way while installing mine, I dropped it only about 3 feet onto the carpet, still was toast though.

After that is just made a clicking noise and wouldn't work. Had to order a new one.

And ironically on the contrary .... dropping a hard drive can sometimes fix them as I've found out from experience... knocking the heads back into place.

[ot]Much like the same concept I had with the last 2 seizures I had.  The first one dislocated my shoulder leaving it immobile for a 2 months until I had the next seizure which "fixed" it[/ot]

Modern (magnetic) hard drives for mobile devices have built in accelerometer. It detects whenever the disk is suddenly moved (i.e. dropped, bumped, jerked etc.) and moves headers to a safe position where they will not hit disk surface. I had my portable hdd falling to the floor while running (not once) and it still works. Don't try it with your average 3.5" internal HDD though :)

As to why OP's disk has broken: shit happens. These devices have large MTBF values, but remember that M in it stands for 'mean' (a.k.a. 'average'). This means most of them do not fail until they're discarded by end user, but a few of them fail within very short time from purchase.

no idea if it was sata or what it was i do not got much knowledge on hardware but after i opened the broken hdd i inside found 2 small disks. some rotator and also a very powerful magnet. and as per my knowledge nobody actually touches it and its always in same place still so it was really strange that it broke.

Your hdd broke because your pr0n collection was getting too freaky so it committed suicide.

Lol reminds of that episode of South Park where the internet goes out and everyone freaks. So once it gets fixed they decide that you should only look up porn once a day and twice at the most.

Good episode. The bast part, all that needed to be done was reset the router lol!
