effigy
Both are correct, but the first is more correct From their website: The official way to pronounce “MySQL” is “My Ess Que Ell” (not “my sequel”), but we don't mind if you pronounce it as “my sequel” or in some other localized way. neylitalo
When it comes to acronyms that don't follow the rules of the English language (PHP, SQL, etc.) I just spell them out. You can say things like AJAX, but PHP and SQL are impossible to pronounce as they are spelled. You can say things like AJAX, but PHP and SQL are impossible to pronounce as they are spelled. Well, how exactly do you say AJAX? Do you pronouce it as in the dutch football team - "i-yax" or, as it first appears, "a-jax" ? After a bit of googling, i suspect the later. Largely because no-one appears to have heard of the dutch team! redbullmarky
considering it's an acronym for English words, not Dutch ones, one would assume that it's A-Jax I HATE the term "sequel" - ok, so it's convenient but is one of these "lets invent a new term to be different and clever!" and normally found in the middle of a Web 2.0 framework screencast somewhere.... grrr. only THIS guy gets away with "saying" acronyms: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RqXdvSgId9c Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/64307-solved-pronouncation-of-my-sql/#findComment-320975 Share on other sites
448191
I'm Dutch. I say "A-jax" in an English sentence, and "ayaks" in a Dutch one. Oh, and I spell SQL, both in Dutch and English. "sequel" doesn't make any sense, does it? zq29
I pronounce it in the correct way, though I have heard a few people refer to it as "sequel", it annoys me too. ober
Guess you've never taken a DB course or read a book. SQL is generally referred to as sequel because it is easier to say. I don't know if you're stating opinion or what here, but I know VERY few people that pronounce it as sequel. It's also probably just me, but I usually discredit those people to a degree because it has a very different connotation for me. When it comes to acronyms that don't follow the rules of the English language (PHP, SQL, etc.) I just spell them out. You can say things like AJAX, but PHP and SQL are impossible to pronounce as they are spelled. Exactly, PHP and sql has no vowels in them. You need vowels to "pronounce" words. The AJAX was more special to me because of the greek hero Ajax from the trojan war. I liked him there.
