1. Couple of categories missing there, most importantly: LAMP Developer: Linux But also HTPC, any type of network-attached machine: Linux And LAMP Developer, day-to-day business unrelated to video or CAD: Linux LAMP Developer, general purpose multimedia machine: Linux
2. Not just software patents, all tech patents IMHO. They are just valid way too long, standing in the way of technological progress. For example, if I want to make a x86 processor I have to get a licence from Intel. Yes, to be permitted to use an instruction set in use in computers since 1978, I have to pay the mighty Intel a truckload of money. Geez, I wonder why there is so little competition on the CPU market.. These patents should be valid for like 5 years or something if we want to get somewhere as a race within my lifetime.
3. Maybe you should close it, unsticky, and restart with a link to this? I agree the current value of the results is pretty close to 0.
4. True, everybody does this whether they admit it or are even aware of it or not. But this is a first impression, opposing impressions (such as of the *actual* intelligence of a person) may follow. Nothing interesting about it, just painfully shortsighted. I mean, I'm all for some level of generalization (all Americans are fascist pigs!) because without some level you can never think in terms larger than your immediate environment (unless you're a supercomputer, in which case you should be banned because bots aren't allowed to post), but rejecting someones education of choice because of their appearance is not just generalization, this is blind willful ignorance of an individuals capabilities based on a generalization. Of course the brutish looking people are stealing all our jobs and women, so I guess it is allowed out of pure spite.
5.
If you have some guy in a school and he is a brutish looking guy, why teach him Alegrbra? The school should be sticking that guy in a machine shop to learn welding or how to rip apart a car
Eh. So.. if it were up to you people's career should be predetermined by their builds?
6. "Mista mista... can I get one dollah.. so eeye can get somting to eat.."
7. True. But lets be fair, I'd rather "deal" with security updates (like with Synaptic) than get them forced at inconvenient times as with Vista and to a degree, XP. I understand that what they're trying to say is that it will be automagical. But saying users won't have to deal with security updates is pure fantasy, unless you don't issue them.

I'm back

Yeah I remember when you were a mod. You were gone before I was one though. Oh, and welcome back of course..
9. Yeah, I rarely print anything either. I actually use the copy function more often. I mean hard copy is so 20th century There *are* people that use other peripherals though (scanners?) and support just sucks on Linux. Which for me personally doesn't weigh up to the benefits though. Anyway, a bit more on topic: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html says it will be OSS. It also make this utterly ludicrous statement though: No security updates? Remember me to stay well clear..
10. Well, hardware support (driver support? can you spell "I shouldn't be writing this"?) in general is pretty good, especially considered the Linux community really isn't getting that much help from the vendors. But peripherals drivers are another issue. I still don't have a proper 64 bit driver for my Canon MP510 printer. I actually boot up VirtualBox with Win XP when I have to print something (which luckily isn't that often).
11. Right, that makes sense. Not sure what I was thinking.
12. Hmmmdaniel? Doesn't the rewrite rule need to match the whole request uri, as in ^(.*)$? Otherwise it repeats the request uri for every char.. Or has this fever damaged what's left of my brain?
13. How so? It is quite possible to generate queries that will work using different SQL flavours. The key is though to NOT use any straight SQL. One interface is used to do the CRUD operations, different driver adapters for different RDBMS flavours will generate different SQL. It is not rocket science, just a LOT of work. What I would recommend is creating a wrapper around PDO, creating a separate adapter for MySQLi. Indeed some stupid hosts have MySQLi enabled but not PDO. But the two are similar enough to create a wrapper around both to get a unified interface. I would use the PDO interface as the base for it. I recently had to create a wrapper around mysqli for Doctrine (the current version really only supports PDO, but they do use a wrapper and a separated interface, which made it possible to create a wrapper around MySQLi that basically implemented the PDO methods that Doctrine uses, but with MySQLi as the backend.
14. ..and write implementation proposals for clients in decent English..
15. That guy should be shot on sight. I cannot believe Google lets people publish crap like that.
16. Right. And Senior Lawyer != Law books. I sincerely hope that was a joke.
17. @nadeemshafi9: what happened to the other half? Crap, this isn't twitter?!?
18. I don't get why people can't just say fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. Lightning coming out of the sky yet?
19. @Adam: That's not how you spell fuck. Nadeem, I have to admit, you are taking it better than I had expected. Hats off for that. Now stop exaggerating your skills and use proper language (nobody takes you seriously when you write like you do) and there's hope yet.
