1. First impressions about the website - nice overall with ok colours. The icons make some of the pages. I see from your credit pages that you used Vista Icon pack 2. Do you have to install some program to extract/obtain the images from them downloads? - Cheers if you have any info. For your Contact page - you should provide a page rather than a mailto:emailaddress. A simple and well done contact page can enhance a website. Unless you are going to add sub menus and lots of stuff - I dont see much sense in having 2 identical Nav bars - one vertical and one horizontal. For the listings page - you could adjust the colours - the pink and the light blues clash a little IMO. Do you know that at a certain browser width in IE - your Nav Menu (vertical) and the one on the right move way down the page? I can get a screengrab if you dont see it. Overall - nice, clean, contained. I would consider trimming down the headings on the index page however. -steve
2. Well when trying to login with a bad pass brings me to a white page with "not today". I think at least you can do is to direct them back to the main login page etc. I registered - and recieved the email ok. When I login - I have to go clicking again to go to the home page. Why cant you do a headers: location="home.php" etc.?? (dont know exact code off hand) 3 Screen grabs of font size differences: [a href=\"http://kartbuilding.net/misc/latenite/\" target=\"_blank\"]http://kartbuilding.net/misc/latenite/[/a] Are the forums totally seperate? If so - thats not great. I dont want to remember 2 passwords! Also when registering - why not let the person choose their own password? I also got:
Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/superl00/domains/superlatenight.com/public_html/index.php on line 89
on the main home page. I included a sceen grab. It seems a little buuggggggyyy ;-) later. -steve
3. 93 images at 1/2 megabyte is unacceptable. Also the width of the posts divs are too narrow. -steve
4. you should use a cookie to store the language choice - so when customers go back to your website - their default language is chosen. -steve
5. For starters you need to validate your code. The validator is at: [a href=\"http://validator.w3.org/\" target=\"_blank\"]http://validator.w3.org/[/a] -steve
6. The font size on your various pages differs. On some pages (index) its very small. On others (video) its too big. A happy medium is needed - and dont have the text size too small please. With your large file size downloads - I hope you dont run into problems with DOSS and people using up your bandwidth allowance. I had this done to me - had to put image verification downloads. I have just got Mysql errors: Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /home/superl00/domains/superlatenight.com/public_html/db.php on line 14 Couldn't connect to server. You should have a nice graphic screen or a nice message saying - please check back. The mysql error was maybe a once off - back working now. Get a nice gui error message & ask them to refresh. The registration gave me:
Warning: main(http://www.superlatenight.com/includes/menu.htm): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found in /home/superl00/domains/superlatenight.com/public_html/reg.php on line 50 Warning: main(http://www.superlatenight.com/includes/menu.htm): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found in /home/superl00/domains/superlatenight.com/public_html/reg.php on line 50 Warning: main(): Failed opening 'http://www.superlatenight.com/includes/menu.htm' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/superl00/domains/superlatenight.com/public_html/reg.php on line 50
It also just sent an email to "asd" without checking proper email address also. You need to beware of spammers also. As for testing your CMS etc. if you setup a test account - I'll go through it. -steve
7. your header graphic [a href=\"http://nnga.matrixcs.biz/images/header2.png\" target=\"_blank\"]http://nnga.matrixcs.biz/images/header2.png[/a] is 500kb. As ober said - completly unacceptable file size. The Web Developer toolbar for firefox gives all useful info. Also the website websiteoptimisation.com will evaluate the file sizes of your website. -steve
8. Overall - well - the top seems empty and open. Your black footer closes off the bottom of your site ok - but the top especially with the animated logo looks a tad empty. Perhaps a div with a light shade of blue etc might work. Im not too gone on the things on the left onmouseover - Why do I have to wait 2-3 seconds to see what it says? Also onmouseover of them things on the left - the black border has round edges showing up at the corners. - it just looks a bit bitmap'y YOU HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS with Browser Compatibility. The news page is broken in Firefox. Also the blue gradient etc. comes out of no-where. On the news and services page - in IE you have to scroll an inner div. In firefox - you have to scroll the entire page. It is best when it is scrolling the entire page rather than having a person scrolling a small div. The contact us page - with the error validation needs dressing up. Has potential needs work. -steve
9. I would recommend setting up a seperate server in your house - dont use your own pc. This is because you can leave a small pc with minimal hardware in your basement etc. and never turn it off ;-) I would setup a small internal network - and/by/or put 2 network cards on this server. Id setup squid proxy server and use this via your personal one. You can do TONS of stuff with a linux server. I use debian sarge stable - and it is rock solid. I have any service I want - mysql, apache, bind (dns), mail, proxy... whatever i want. Debian is very very simple to use and there is TONS of stuff out there on it. I wrote a wiki on all I setup covering basic installing with cd - to firewalls (iptables) - to dns - to mail. Its at [a href=\"http://wiki.kartbuilding.net\" target=\"_blank\"]http://wiki.kartbuilding.net[/a] It has been a learning experience. I am also looking into getting a "Virtual Machine" service where you can get your own Virutal Computer (using xen etc.) It only costs €20 a month with some services. For testing and mucking around - I have apache/php/mysql on my windows box which If I want can NAT to my outside linux box. -steve
10. Hi - I think its ok. Once after switching to English - I knew from your Logo - that your website is a "Freelance Courier" or providing some sort of associated service. On the About Page - it would be nice to see a flow diagram of how this system (ordering etc.) process works. The Send This Page - This is an open relay for SPAM in my opinion. Although its not easy to send the email to more than 1 person (via email address format checking) a simple loop can run off tons and tons of emails to various people. I recommend you limit the Emails/Send This Page emails sent by IP in a day. So every IP can send just 1 email every day (max) - get the idea? When signing up - if I get a mistake and it takes me back nicely - thats fine - BUT WHY DO YOU CHECK -> "I wish to be notified by email when I receive messages from other users." - This is just a PAIN. I unclicked it - I dont want to have to go reading through the whole form to see if Im going to get tons of emails. - get the idea? The same with Main City - I selected it the first time - if I make a mistake - I am sent back to the form - but why isnt the city I selected still slected. Its just user friendleness IMO. It could have been cause I chose Europe - and that Mightnt be a city - but its in your list - so its VAGUE on your side. Part of the sign-up message is not in English -> "You have registered correctly. Tu registro se ha efectuado correctamente. We have sent you an email with a link to activate your account to sburke.." When I went to my email on a different computer - I went to the activiation URL - but the page was not in English. I though it might have been English cause I signed up with english. Also I signed up with UserID -> o'reilly Because you have magic_quotes on - I get o\'reilly . It doesnt seem to break too much when I sign in - but its something to watch out for. When signed in - It says "Mi Account" - I think tahts meant to be My Account!! Also - I see a blank page with only the navigation. I think I should see some welcome message or something to say "here is your profile" etc. get the idea? Actually something may be broken - Im going through all the links on the left NAV when signed in and I dont see anything appear on the main white div area. My Username is: o\'reilly pass: 123456 you can check it out for yourself. Ah - I see now - I have to go up to "POST". WHY DIDNT I SEE some text saying "No Entries" or Please make a POST??? - NoT very user friendly. Im going to leave it at that. Basic front is ok and fairly user friendly. Once logged in and trying to make posts etc. - this is not very user friendly. For times and dates - I would prefer to see a calender rather than scrolling to dates. From using a nice user friendly calender I can see what date is what day of the week. Get the idea? Rgds, steve
11. [!--quoteo(post=369831:date=Apr 29 2006, 09:59 AM:name=tjhilder)--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(tjhilder @ Apr 29 2006, 09:59 AM) [/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--quotec--] the reason I haven't got it set to default is that some people don't accept cookies, those that do can simply tick the box (you'll be logged in for 30 days unless you delete the cookie.) I'm thinking of making it so that you can set how long you want it stored for.
But without clicking this "Remember Me" box - I cant login successfully. Im using IE 6. Rgds, Steve
12. Apart from that gradient background - I overall like the appearance of it. I would either remove the gradient altogethor to have it a light green hue - like the light green you are already using. The flash distracts me a lot from the website - it loads up black and dark grey - not v. attractive. YOU HAVE A SMALL PROBLEM WITH YOUR CSS CODE -> On IE 6 your NNGA Tournament Results, and Upcoming Schedule - The entire divs appear light green/blue instead of every 2nd one (alternating background colours) as in Firefox and Opera. -steve
13. It needs some work IMO. Why is there a big gap between the left nav and the content? - Currently it seems that the Nav and the COntent are totally seperate. The top logo needs work - it fades out too dark at the bottom. On your BANDS page (which took a awful long time to load on this t3)-> The last item: eugene - the thumbnail - guess what size: 624Kb !! for a thumbnail !!! wtf? Other thumbnails on that page vary from 312Kb to ... well whatever. Why does the Calender open on a new page? I think I have seen this calender and its login before BTW. Im glad to see you skined your forums a little. you should put the image verification on the sign-up of a new user. Overall its ok. Id like to see the Nav better done. -steve
14. You need to limit the "Comments" - I just copied a fair amount of stuff in. Having to Click "Remember Me" is still a pain. I do allow cookies - why should I have to click Remember Me - Id have it as default - and if I want your website to forget me - then Id provide a Logout button. -steve
15. Tis ok. The skins are fine - if thats what you meant about the 9 styles etc. The size of your main page (http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/) is 532Kb - that is a bit silly really. Overl 100Kb and I do be worried. Ive also noticed on that report - that all your images are html ones and not css. CSS images and background images are the way to faster loading. Get triming them images - and that way before you can control which images/tabs load first. The forums are bog-standard. Id like to see you change them with your style switcher!! -steve
16. The shades of blue in your main page dont match those in the top banner div. I suggest you keep with the blues in your banner. As the lads said - Fix up that image/logo in the top left. oooh - why are you using frames?? Why show me the wrong time ;-) -> Fri Apr 28, 2006 04:09 AM. Im here in GMT. Use client side javascript if you must. If the website is just for family & friends you are going to need to change your registration to include a special invitation code etc. Your doing some funny stuff with your logout.php also. HA HA HA - If I go directly to -> [a href=\"http://www.shaundaniels.com/pictures/index.php\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.shaundaniels.com/pictures/index.php[/a] I dont have to login. :) I think you need to rethink them frames. Overall - tis ok. Some bugs left. Im not mad gone on the blues - epecially in the main body. -steve
17. The login works ok for me - after ticking the Remember Me box! Anyhoo - onto the critique. Well nice website and apperance - you cant beat putting a nice photo onto a website to help it along. I wouldn't mind seeing a change of photos - or random photos using the same theme. As for the login - if you login with a wrong password - I get to see some SQL and it just begs me to try some SQL injection.... Your simple but effective Nav on the top right - well its a bit far away when looking at the gallery or news or members. Its either closer to go to my back button - bad idea, or to go all the way up to your top nav. - get the idea? As for adding comments - it puts in the year 1970!! If Im not logged in - and I go to the Gallery Section it says: Notice You must be a Registered Member and Sign in to view this area. but you do not provide a URL/link in the text to Register/sign in. Well its just that Registered Member is underlined and I think its a link. Anyways - nice and simple - a little buggy (login). Youve a nice bit to go - handling images etc. Rgds, steve
18. [!--quoteo(post=368579:date=Apr 25 2006, 07:56 PM:name=jcombs_31)--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(jcombs_31 @ Apr 25 2006, 07:56 PM) [/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--quotec--] thanks for the screenshot, can you check for me again, I made a change to the CSS file.
Afraid its still not quite right. Here is a screen of a different page [a href=\"http://kartbuilding.net/misc/jcombs1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"]http://kartbuilding.net/misc/jcombs1.jpg[/a] The Contact Preferences are a little dodgy in IE also. Apart from been a tad on the small side - in IE there is a grey box around the radio buttons (see my screen shot above). I dont know if you are worried about printing etc., but your print preview in opera could do with a little adjsuting. Rgds, Steve
19. Jcombs - Im using IE 6 and it is broken. Screengrab= [a href=\"http://kartbuilding.net/misc/jcombs.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"]http://kartbuilding.net/misc/jcombs.jpg[/a] As for the website - I do be getting performance issues with multimedia-technologies.com. If I do a CTRL F5 it can take minutes to get from your server IMO. Oh ya - The light grey bars show up better now. Looks ok at that. Rgds, Steve
20. [!--quoteo(post=368463:date=Apr 25 2006, 03:38 PM:name=MoFish)--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(MoFish @ Apr 25 2006, 03:38 PM) [/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--quotec--] I'm not sure really on the code of checking files on submission, but would it be something like the following.
//get the type of file of the file user is uploading $type = $_FILES['image']['type']; //if the type does not squals jpg then display an error message if (!$type == "jpg" ) {     echo "You can only upload jpg's"; //else the file is a jpg, so lets continue. } else {
Wish I had learned this language a couple years before now. Starting to enjoy it.
I think you should be more thorough and use -> [a href=\"http://ie2.php.net/manual/en/function.mime-content-type.php\" target=\"_blank\"]http://ie2.php.net/manual/en/function.mime-content-type.php[/a] Im not sure - but a person can rename a php file to be jpg - and then upload it, and the script may/maynot run, depending on how its called - I think anyways. You have to Validate Validate and Validate *any* user input. -steve
21. The top graphic is broken in IE. The top graphic on the Services page jumps to the left when coming from other pages. It doesnt look bad - center aligned. Perhaps if you put a 1px left and right border and something in the background like with your main www.multimedia-technologies.com might look nice. I have to say that I cant really see the light grey horizontal bars. Rgds, Steve
22. Ah ya - the site looks great. I was just focusing way too much on the header. Still think that right area could do with something. On the about page -> tis nice how the bottom stays blue/grey. I would try and put that top white div a very light shade of grey to set aside. Neways - nice overall. -steve
23. Humm.... definately a couple of bugs floating around. Any message posted with a single quote, e.g. brian o'connell will not work. That vertical line which you dont have a scooby about - well its worse when going through the forums - buuugggy. Ah HEY :( -- FAIL The user can upload a shagging php file -> [a href=\"http://mo.dotgeek.org/UNISITE/gallery/test.php\" target=\"_blank\"]http://mo.dotgeek.org/UNISITE/gallery/test.php[/a] come on. You need to do a little more debugging and coding. I'll leave it at that. Will check it later -steve
24. Ober: there was a very minor change to the height of the white div. jcombs: Im out of ideas. Rgds, Steve
25. This bit is wrong -> if($result !=="0"){ You done very well to code the entire website yourself. It looks good. -steve
