  1. And of course I was stupid enough to Google "How to make breadcrumbs."
  2. Hey Guys, You know that page paths at the top and bottom of the page. They are pretty much the path of how you got here. Any idea what those are called or how to build them? Are those breadcrumbs? Thanks!
  3. I was a huge noob when I found this forum too! Now I am an "Advanced Member." Doesn't mean much, but it makes me feel good. There is one of the resources I use to learn PHP. Everyone is really nice here. I am here almost everyday now. Ask away! From one new guy to another I would also suggest checking out website critique and the miscellaneous forum. Lots of fun stuff going on there.
  4. First off, I wouldn't stop and start the <?php?> tags for one command. Just write it all inside the same tags. Also, make your query its own variable. Just to clean up the code I would do the following: $get = "SELECT * FROM category"; $qry=mysql_query($get, $con); if(!$qry) { die("Query Failed: ". mysql_error()); } while($row=mysql_fetch_array($qry)) { $x = $row['category_en']; echo "<option value='$x'>''$x</option>"; echo "<option value='$x'>'$x'</option>"; } Correct me if I am wrong, but the echo will just echo the x variable. I am not sure why you while looped and fetched the same entry twice. Also, when inside of an echo use the single quotes.
  5. No problems at all. I am in the process of creating a database map and I was just wondering if multiple databases would improve performance. I guess I was thinking along the lines of more computer processors means more power. I was thinking it was the same idea. Then again, both processors work at the same time to complete the same goal, so I guess not. Thanks guys!
  6. I know that part. By store them in my database I mean store the file name and path in the database. Is there an advantage to using multiple databases regardless of the content inside the tables??
  7. In your first if statement divisor is not set as a variable. Should be $divisor. Idk what the 0 is for.
  8. Hello All, I was wondering what is the point of having multiple databases? Why not just have X amount of tables inside of one database? If you have multiple databases that means you have to open and close more than one database on one page. I am wondering this because I was thinking about putting all of my uploaded photos into their own database to make a more searchable and well structured database. Does it make it faster? Thanks in advance!
  9. How do you even contact Google?? I feel like that is trying to get into contact with aliens or some greater being. Hahaha!!
  10. Anyone know any good free web hosts? Preferably, unlimited disk space, no required ads, unique domain and a decent server. I know you get what you pay for, but I just want it for my personal website and sandbox.
  11. No, global commodities like the price of oil effects the price of things in your city and your region that require oil. So, everyone in your region is effected by the same price of oil. The intelligent sim system is pretty cool as well.
  12. Did anyone see that this game will include global commodities?? That is sooo cool! Does anyone know the specs for this game?
  13. Hahahahahaha! I was going to say the same thing about Staten Island, but I didn't think anyone would get it
  14. Still! It is the idea! My fourth grade teacher made us write everything in cursive. When I write I combine regular handwriting with cursive. Maybe just because I spent my whole fourth grade year writing in cursive I might have a stronger connection to it. I do agree with you on the math part though. Essential to living. I use to be terrible at math, but I was a cashier for about three years and that helped em out a little more. I think that the problem is that we are not spending enough time on the fundamentals of learning a topic. Just for a comparison I hit a hurdle in my PHP coding the other day and I realized maybe I need to go back to the basics. That is kind of what I did with math and it worked out, so why not??
  15. I do have to take the class, but like I said before it does give me some good basic coding and web design practice. Seriously though, it's is not just me. The class isn' the problem, I don't mind taking the class. I have been in plenty of classes where I already know what we are learn, like the basic web design class I had to take before this one. Just the teach saying those things that I had mentioned in my first post. My jaw hurts from how many times my jaw hit the table every time she said one of those quotes. SHE'S KILLING ME SMALLS! Im in the class as I type! That thing from the Atlantic is crazy. I didn't read the whole thing because I am in class, but I got the idea. Did you hear that they want to stop teaching cursive?? I had this conversation with some of my friends. I don't know when you guys took the SATs, but remember that disclaimer we had to rewrite in cursive? That was crazy! How are people going to sign signatures??
  16. I am in if everyone is interested. No joke
  17. You know how the new Sim City has multiplayer where you have cities right next to each other and each city relies on the other? We should just start a giant PHP Freaks Sim City community. We could easily create a state.
  18. It is my minor, so there is really no real reason to re-evaluate the university. I guess it gives me some practice. I was just hoping to learn more than practice. It is just really hard to balance my school, with extracurricular, with learning code, so I was hoping to be placed in a class where I could learn more. And just for the record, all of my IDD class, whether it be webdesign or graphic design, we get taught by Lynda.com. Great resource, but it takes up sooooo much of my free time. They are like 3 or 4 hour classes outside of class. So pretty much how class goes is the night before I will watch like 3 or 4 hours of Lynda.com and then do the exercise and then in my 3 and a half our class we look at everyone's stuff and tell them what they can do better. I am definitely going to write a complaint to the chair of the department.
  19. Hello All, I wanted to start a conversation to get some thoughts on social media integration in a website. Pretty much effectively using social media plugins to generate conversation. I feel like throwing social media plugins into your design can lead to poor design. They do get kind of clunky and can be tough to style at times. I know about ShareThis, AddThis and Jtweetsanywhere, but does anyone else know of any other effective solutions, techniques or tools, for social media integration. Thanks,
  20. Hello Everyone, Has anyone ever heard of using the Microsoft Word blog post function with PHP? I was wonder if it would be possible to post an article on a website using the Microsoft Word blog post function and then store the article and some other information in a database. Just an idea...
  21. When they catch terrorists they send them to Guantanamo Bay. When they find criminal coders they send them to this class. What did I do wrong??
  22. Hey Everyone, I have been dying to tell someone about this, but I feel that since my friends are not coders they wouldn't fully get how much my teacher aggravates me. So, my minor is college is interactive digital design which is graphic and web design. This semester, my fall senior semester, I decided to take the "Advanced Web Design Class." I took the basic web design class my previous year, which was a breeze because I have been self taught in HTML and CSS for about four years and PHP and MYSQL for about a year. I have this teacher who teaches "Advanced Web Design" and claims to have cooperate clients for web site development. I keep putting "Advanced Web Design" in quotes because this class is a JOKE! My so called teacher has said the following, which has had me banging my head on my keyboard during class: "I don't like to code because I don't like to type." "I don't like to code because I am a bad speller." "Dreamweaver is better than coding." :'( "I buy all of my form validation code." "Spry bars are better." "You shouldn't be using PHP in my class." I asked her to show me some of her work and she showed me this stupid website she made about some female bulldog. I have no idea, Mrs. Something. I started to laugh and she was serious. She used like 20 JPEGS like puzzles pieces, so the site took a solid 5 minutes to load. Here I was thinking I was going to get a class where I could practice PHP and javascript, but instead we are going over the basics of HTML and CSS. Today she taught us how to attach style sheets to our web pages, using Dreamweaver of course. I tried to explain to her that she needs to at least teach her students the basics of coding, so they can debug their Dreamweaver code when it goes wrong. She told me to let her do her job. Then she spent the rest of the class helping everyone debug their Dreamweaver mistakes. Glad I got that out!
  23. I agree on the stripes comment. Lose them! If you are going to make a text heavy website I would suggest using sans-serif fonts. They are proven to be easier to read and easier on the eyes. Also lose the drop shadow on the headers. I would suggest overall just coming up with a 3 color, color scheme.
  24. Good call! That makes a lot of sense. Yeah these are my early days of PHP. You will find me on here a lot talking about proper practices. I try not to flood the forum everyday, but I do like to strike conversation every once in a while. Thanks for the insight!
