No.

Java is a compiled desktop/system language with entirely different design goals than PHP. The two are not comparable. PHP is primarily a web language. Even though it can be used from the command line or even for some desktop applications, that is not what it was designed for and it's not very good at that.

Says you. My OS is built on PHP.

Sorry, I figured this thread had already been derailed enough.

Why do questions like this get so many answers? Surely there's somebody who's posted a long-winded, difficult question that could be given all this time everyone seems to have?

Basically, he is asking if there is anything Java can do that PHP can't, and if there is, then what can it do?

Scootstah gave a good answer though.

Your response should be something like: "Java can do xyz that PHP can't. This is useful because of abc."

Simple enough for me, although I know nothing of Java - or PHP for that matter.

Yes, but taking a break every now and then from answering those questions is nice. It's like having cake. Something you can do every now and then, but not too often...

To shift the snark in a different direction, isn't this something the OP could have learned/determined by doing some research on their own?  I mean, Java is a well-known platform, and presumably the OP has some experience in PHP.  Surely it's not that difficult to compare and contrast the two languages.  Even looking at their comparative Wikipedia descriptions would bear fruit.

It's a VBScript concept.  At least, that's when i learned it.

It is not. It is a general principle, language agnostic.

I'm actually surprised to see coders who haven't heard of GIGO...I guess it's an "old school" term not really used anymore?  Which is kinda odd to me, since it still holds true as a principle to this day... wtf do classes teach you kids these days?!? :P And on that note...

Maybe Perl vs PHP - which is fancier?

How is any less vague than the OP?  MOAR GIGO.

I thought you were talking about the posting user, not the question, and was going with "get in get out" like they posted and ran. *shrug*

My classes taught me that college was a waste of time & money. I'm a proud dropout. :-P

They aren't taught anything. The school administrators are too afraid of hurting some little brat's feelings, or damaging their ever-so-fragile self esteem.
